Explain the baroque painting in Holland
During the reign of Philip II of Spain the northern provinces of the netherlands rebelled against his repression of protestants and formed a new dutch republic; the southern provinces remained catholic and royal to spain, thus the creation of the seperate countries holland and flanders.
holland in the 17th century was a country or merchants and tradespeople. Not just religious and political leaders, but even they collected art.
Explain how Paris became the center of the art world.
king louis XIV came to the throne and ruled until 1715 > reign was longest in European history > soon established control over art and architecture > did this through the french academy > paris became the center of the western art world.
Explain how 2 groups were created at the French Academy.
Poussin was favored above all other painters > alienated many younger members who had nothing with Poussin´s classicism but Ruben´s bravura > end of the 17th century the academy split into 2 groups > poussinistes and rubénistes.
Explain the poussinistes and rubénistes.
Poussinistes argued that line was superior because it appealed to the mind, color only appealed to the senses. Rubénistes said that color was truer to nature, line appealed only to an educated mind, but color appealed to all.
