Donato Bramante (1444-1514)
His reputation was based largely on a building called the tempietto. Constructed from 1502 on the site where st. peter was believed to have been crucified. Tempietto is an adaption of a classical temple of the Doric order, including a complete entablature.
The building itself is set on a stepped base and surrounded by a peristyle (continuous row of columns). First story is topped by a balustrade (carved railing), inside of which is a drum (circular wall) on which bramante set a classically hemispheric dome. The plan with its deeply recessed spaces created a dramatic play of light and dark.
