1.3 - Artwork of architecture Flashcards
Mannerist architects responded to the revival of the antique in unorthodox ways.
Vestibule of the laurentian library in florence (family library of the medici).
Begun by michelangelo in 1524, the staircase was designed between 1558 and 1559 and the room was completed by Bartolomeo ammanati :
- 2 stories high, so higher than it is long or wide
- niches (wall recesses) are smaller at the bottom than the top
- columns are set into the wall, not in front of it.
- scroll brackets are rendered nonfunctional by their placement.
- impression is one of walls pushing in, crushing the visitor
- staircase has 3 separate flights at the bottom but only 1 into the doorway at the top (traffic problem).
by andrea palladio.
created a building in mannerist style that was to be highly influential, the villa rotunda. Demonstrates the extreme to which palladio carried his passion for symmetry and ancient architecture, since all 4 sides are identical. the central dome recalls that of the ancient roman pantheon. the result is amazing, with an impressive grandeur.
yet the idea of a home has been transformed into something intimidating: the visitor is humbled by the ascent of many steps required to gain entry, and the bedrooms upstairs have low ceilings.
