What is epiglottitis
Inflammation of epiglottis or sub-glottic region
What age dose epiglottitis occur

What organism causes epiglottitis
Haemophillus Influenza B
Why is epiglottitis more rare than it used to be
Due to introduction of haemophillus influenza B vaccine into immunisation schedule
How will epiglottitis present clinically
- Sore throat (Drooling, Muffled voice, Dysphagia)
- High T
- Soft stridor
- Tripod position
- Respiratory distress
What will a painful throat prevent the child doing
- Talking: Muffle Voice
- Swallowing: Dysphagia and Drooling
What temperature are children with epiglottitis
High fever (39-40ā)
What is the tripod position and its advantage
Child leans forward and extends their neck - used to open up the airway.
What is the mnemonic to remember presentation of epiglottitis
Three Dās
Drooling
Dyspneoa
Distress
Explain how the diagnosis of epiglottitis is made
Clinical. Do NOT investigate with a tongue depressor as this can cause airway obstruction.
Contact senior anaesthetist or ENT surgeon for examination under anaesthesia.
If a lateral C-spine radiograph is taken in epiglottitis what will be seen
Thumbprint sign - due to thickening of epiglottic border
What is first-line management of epiglottitis
IV cefotaxime
What antibiotic is given in epiglottitis and how
IV Cefotaxime
If complete obstruction in epiglottitis how is it managed
Tracheostomy
What is given to household contacts of someone with epiglottitis
Prophylactic rifampicin
