- SS, completely loyal to hitler and feared by the people
- first concentration camps set up after 1933 initially to hold political prisoners
what was the gestapo and how did it control people?
- the secret police
- people were encouraged to report anyone to the gestapo who they believed were anti Nazi
- gestapo was aided by local wardens who would ensure that Germans were loyal to the local regime
- most germans were prepared to accept the new regime either out of fear or because they agreed with the Nazis’ aims
who was goebbels and what did he do?
- he was in charge of the nazi ‘propaganda machine’ to promote main Nazi ideas
- he cultivated the ‘Hitler myth’ which portrayed hitler as a saviour of germany
what did the Nuremberg rallies do?
it was a huge propaganda event that gave the impression that the Nazis were bringing strength and order after a period of chaos

by abolishing the treaty of versailles and restoring political stability

- in 1933 books which held ideas the Nazis didn’t approve of were burned

- Jazz was banned as ‘black’ music
