2A Circulatory System- The Blood Vessel Flashcards
1
Q
Whats the 3 different types of blood vessels found in the body
A
arteries, veins and capillaries
2
Q
how are the arteries adapted for their function
A
carry blood away from the heart towards organs
- thick layers of muscle- strong cause pumped at high pressure
- elastic fibres- stretch and spring back
- walls thick compared to lumen
3
Q
how are capillaries adapted to their function
A
arteries branch into capillaries- carry blood close to every cell in body
- permeable walls- diffusion
- one cell thick walls- incs rate of diff
- very narrow-large sa/vo ratio=incs rate of diff
- small lumen
4
Q
how are veins adapted for their function
A
capillaries join up to form veins-carry blood to heart
- not as thick wall- low pressure
- bigger lumen- help blood flow
- valves- keep blood flow in right direction
5
Q
how to calc the rate of blood flow
A
vol of blood/mins (ml/m)
