2A Circulatory System- The Blood Flashcards
1
Q
what is blood and whats in it
A
tissue, containing red/white blood cells, platelets and plasma
2
Q
whats the function of red blood cells
A
transport oxygen around the body
3
Q
how are red blood cells adapted to their functions
A
- biconcave shape- large sa for absorbing oxygen
- contains haemoglobin- carries oxygen
- no nucleus- moe room for haemoglobin
4
Q
whats the function of white blood cells
A
defend against microorganisms that cause dieseases
5
Q
how are white blood cells adapted to their function
A
- engulf unwelcome microorganisms (phagocytosis) and digest them
- produce antibodies to fight microorganisms
- produce antitoxins- neutralises any toxins produced by microorganism
- nucleus
6
Q
whats the function of platelets
A
small frags of cells that help clot blood at a wound to seal the wound from loosing too much blood
7
Q
whats the function of plasma
A
carries everything in blood eg amino acids
8
Q
whats the equation of transporting oxygen
A
lungs: oxygen + haemoglobin = oxyhemoglobin
