Stress
a stimulus or a process or a response.
Stressor
is the event that causes the stress.
Adaptation
is the change to responses to stress over time.
Primary appraisal
Identification (evaluating an event for its personal meaning)
Secondary appraisal
Coping (active process of managing taxing processes)
Developmental crises
For example, can be related to mastering developmental tasks as an individual or family
Situational crises
For example, natural disaster, the end of an intimate relationship, loss of work
Glucocorticoids
anti-inflammatory agents
Distress
Damaging stress
Eustress
Stress that protects health
-motivating energy (happiness/hopefulness)
Trauma
physical damage to body or felling of fear/stress after traumatizing event
Acute stress disorder
Caused by exposure to one or more traumatic events and lasts up to 1 month after a traumatic event; the reaction is one of intense fear, helplessness, or horror
Flashbacks
Avoidance of memory of trauma
Hyperarousal
Sleep disturbance, irritability, anger
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Symptoms and trigger are similar to those of an acute stress disorder, but symptoms are more persistent (longer than 1 month)
Situational factors
Arise from job changes, illness, caregiver stress
Maturational factors
Vary with life stages
