27. Statistical Testing AO1 Flashcards
Why are statistical tests used?
To see if results are due to a difference/association or if they are due to chance
What are the three criteria for choosing a statistical test?
- Looking for a difference or correlation/associated
- Is experimental design related of unrelated
- What is the level of measurement
What type of study is related?
Repeated measures or matched pairs
What type of study is un-related?
Independent groups
What is nominal data?
Categories - each item appears in one category, no order (e.g. Naming a favourite football team)
What is ordinal data?
Placed in order - data is numerical, ordered scale, intervals are subjective (e.g. Rating something on a scale of 1-10)
Name an issue with ordinal data
Lacks precision because based on subjective opinion rather than objective measures
What is interval data?
Units of equal size - based on numerical scales, includes units of equal, precisely defined size
What data is better than ordinal?
Interval data because more detail is preserved as the scores are not converted to ranks
