10. Observation AO1 Flashcards
What are observational techniques?
A way of seeing or listening to what people do without having to ask them, often used within an experiment as a way of assessing the DV
Define what a naturalistic experiment is
Takes place where the target behaviour would normally occur
Define what a controlled experiment is
Some control/manipulation of variedades including control of EV’s
What is a covert experiment?
Participants are unaware they are being studied
What is an overt experiment?
Participants are aware they’re being studied
Explain what participant means in regard to observational techniques
When the researcher becomes part of the group they are studying
Explain what non-participant means in regard to observational techniques
When researcher remains separate from group they’re studying
Explain what behavioural categories are
The target behaviour to be observed should be broken up into a set of observable categories
Explain what time sampling is
Observations are made at regular intervals e.g. once every 15 seconds
Explain what event sampling is
A target behaviour/event is recorded every time it occurs
