Explain questionnaires
Questionnaires are made up of a pre-set list of written questions to which the participant responds, they can be used as part of an experiment to access the DV
What is an interview?
Face to face interaction between interviewer and interviewee
What are the tree types of interview?
- Structures
- Unstructured
- Semi-structured
What is a structured interview?
List of pre-determined questions asked Ina fixed order
What is an unstructured interview?
There are no set questions, there is a general topic to be discussed but the interaction is free-flowing and the interviewee is encouraged to elaborate
What are semi-structures interviews?
Like of questions that have been worked out in advance but interviewers are free to ask follow-up questions when appropriate
What are the three elements to writing good questionnaires
- Avoid jargon
- Avoid double-barrelled questions
- Avoid leading questions
What is a closed question give an example
Respondent has limited choices - data is quantitative - e.g. How many cigarettes do you smoke in a day? 0-10, 11-20 etc
What is a open question give an example
Respondents provide their own answers expressed in words - qualitative data - e.g. why did you start smoking?
What is an interview schedule?
A standardised list of questions that the interviewer needs to cover, can reduce interviewer bias
Explain the role of a quiet room
Will increase likelihood of interviewee opening up
What does rapport begin with?
Neutral questions to make participants feel relaxed
What is the role of ethics?
To remind interviewees that answers will be treated in confidence
