25. Reliability Across All Methods Of Investigation AO1 Flashcards
What is reliability?
A measure of consistency - if a measurement is repeated and the result is the same
What is test-retest?
The same test is given to the same person multiple times, if the test is the reliable results such be the same
Explain inter-observer
Two or more observers compare the data by conducting a pilot study, they watch the same event or sequence but record data independently
What is a pilot study?
A small-scale trial run of the observation
How is reliability measured?
Using a correlation
What is done in test-retest and inter-observer studies?
The two sets of scores are correlated
What should the correlation coefficient be
Exceed +80 to be reliable
How does rewriting questions improve reliability?
The researcher may replace some open questions with closed fixed choices that are less ambiguous
How should reliability occur in an interview
Using the same interviewer each time
Explain standardised procedures
Lab experiments are often described as being reliable because of the strict control over many aspects of the procedure,
What are experiments usually classed as?
Standardised procedures
What are observations usually classed as?
Operationalisation of behavioural categories
Explain behavioural categories
- Should be measurable not open to interpretation
- Categories shouldn’t over lap and every option should be included - may lead to inconsistencies if people don’t know where to answer
