Why was it needed?
A
- In the 18th and 19th century, Liverpool handled thousands of imports and exports per day, however in the 1980s, it experienced industrial decline as the docks closed. As a result, there were increased crime rates, economic and social deprivation.
- The Merseyside development corporation was set up in 1981 by Margaret Thatcher’s government to regenerate the Mersey Docks

What did the scheme achieve?
A
- Invested £2 billion into the Merseyside’s waterfront and provided the infrastructure and environment that should continue to attract inward investment and to provide growth within the region
- The dock improved Liverpool’s image and the city was awarded the ‘European Capital of Culture’ in 2008 due to the football team, museums and music
- Improved image increased tourism which led to over 15 million visitors for the 7,000 cultural events in 1 year
- £2.8 million was spent in the city which boosted the economy by £800 million
- Jobs created in the manufacturing centre when docks were constructed

What were the drawbacks of the scheme?
A
- Costs of investing into regeneration of the docks
- Closure of small local businesses as new companies were taking over
- Manufacturing jobs were only temporary while docks were being built
- House prices/ rent had risen in the area which meant original residents had to move away - loss of skilled workers in major industries `
