2.19. Sustainable Urban Development Flashcards
What is an ecological footprint?
The total area of productive land and water required to produce the resources a population consumes and absorb the waste produced.
What is liveability?
The characteristics of a city which improve the quality of life for people living there
What is a sustainable city?
A city which provides employment, a high standard of living, a clean, healthy environment and fair governance for all its residents.
What is sustainable development?
Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
What is urban resilience?
The capacity of individuals, communities, institutions, businesses and systems within a city to survive, adapt and grow, no matter what kinds of chronic stresses and acute shocks they experience
How is a city a system?
Inputs: food goods, non-renewable energy, people
Outputs: waste, air pollution, goods, services, wealth, sprawl
How is a sustainable/circular city system presented?
Inputs: local food + goods, conservation and use of renewable energy, people
Processes: Recycling of organic waste, recycling of inorganic waste
Outputs: Reduced outputs
How can inputs be reduced in a sustainable system?
- Urban farming
- Harvesting rain water
- Locally sourced food to reduce food miles
What are examples of green cities?
- Copenhagen
- Freiburg
- Cuntibia
What impacts do urban areas have on the local environment?
- Lots of vehicle usage and traffic congestion can cause a lot of air pollution
- Urban areas create more waste
- Building on greenfield sites
- Grit on road
- Vehicles contributing to microclimate leading to urban heat island
- Water demand
- Water quality -> runoff from roads/industry

What impacts do urban areas have on the global environment?
- Landfill
- Trade waste - pollution in transport
What are the 5 factors of liveability in the context of an urban area?
- Stability
- Healthcare
- Culture and environment
- Education and infrastructure
What are the economic developments that contribute to sustainable urban living?
- Access to affordable housing
- Decent employment opportunities
- Investment in green technology
- Production and distribution of renewable energy
What urban governance strategies lead to sustainable urban living?
- Adoption of green urban planning and design strategies
- Community links are strong and communities work together to deal with issues such as crime and security
- Strengthening of civil and political rights
- Strategies to reduce inequality
- Support of national, regional and global links
