In my opinion Chinese is the hardest language I ever studied. Compared to languages like Spanish or French, I feel it takes two or three times as long to study this language.
What’s the reason for this?
Chinese is a tonal language, so the meaning of words can change based on the pronunciation of a syllable, which makes the learning process for Westerners incredibly difficult. Take for example this sentence:
Shishi, a poet in the stone chamber, was fond of lions and vowed to eat ten lions.
How can anybody understand this crazy sentence? This makes me sometimes ask myself why so many people in the world speak this cursed language?

Chinese is a syllabic language. Many Chinese characters are composed of two syllables. The meaning of these words usually comes from the meanings of the individual characters that make up the syllable pair. Because there are only about 400 syllables in Chinese, many words sound exactly the same but have different meanings.
These words are called homophones.
Most of the time, you can only understand the meaning of homophones by looking at the context. Being able to read Chinese characters is an advantage. You can more easily understand the meanings of homophones, and if you remember individual characters, it’s easier to remember the meanings of syllable pairs.
Lastly, by knowing the meaning of each individual word, you can even guess the meaning of new words. That is super helpful
