Why was the Monitor so amazing?
Because it saved the Union’s fleet and continued the blockade.

It focused on taking control of the Mississippi River

-Would cut off eastern part of Confederacy from food sources in West
-Union could use bases along the Mississippi River

Why didn’t Abraham Lincoln free the slvaes?
-Did not believe he had constitutional power
-Worried about the effects
Where did the Emancipation Proclamation free slaves at?
freeing slaves only in areas controlled by Confederacy
What happened to the South since they had no slaves?
The loss of slavery crippled the South’s ability to wage war.
Why did President Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation?
President Lincoln realized that one way to weaken the South was to free the slave
Also the Abolitionists wanted Lincoln to free the slaves.
What did African Americans do after they were free?
volunteered to fight
What gave African Americans the right to join the army in South Carolina?
The war Department gave Contrabands

What was the problem for African Americans that would join the army?
-African Americans soldiers received less pay than white soldiers
-Faced greater dangers b/c if captured by Confederates they could be returned to Slavery
Since African Americans if captured during war could be sent back to slavery what did Abraham Lincoln suggest?
Lincoln suggest these soldiers be rewarded by getting the right to vote

They believed war was not necessary
How did President Lincoln see Copperheads?
Lincoln saw Copperheads as a threat to the war effort.
Since, President Lincoln did not like Copperheads what did he do?
He had Copperheads put in jail with no evidence and no trial. To do this, he ignored their right of habeas corpus.
Why did a riot in New York Break out?
B/c Congress approved the draft of forced military service, it’s a lot of money to get out of it

How were troops on the battle fields?
-Endless rows of troops fired directly at one another
-Many men died to gain every inch of groud
What were the main killers of the battle?
-They did not have medicines to stop infections.
-The biggest killer in the war was disease, such as typhoid, pneumonia, and tuberculosis.
How was life for prisoners if captured?
Military prisoners on both sides lived in misery.
-They had little shelter, food, or clothing. -Starvation and disease killed thousands.
What did people that were to old or young to go to war do?
Worked in factories and farms
Why were woman mainly the back bone of the war while men were gone?
On farms, woman performed daily chores usually done by men

Organized the collection of medicine and supplies for delivery to the battlefield

In the South established a small hospital that became a major army hospital

Her work led to the forming of the organization that would become the American Red Cross

He dedicated a new cemetery at Gettysburg and delivered the Gettysburg Address

-Ulysses kept moving toward Richmond but suffered huge casualties.
-Failure to capture Richmond by election of 1864 distressed Lincoln.
