1.22 The Short-Term Effects Of Exercise On The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the respiratory equation?
Tidal volume (TV) x frequency (f) = minute ventilation (VE)
What is tidal volume (TV)?
The amount of air inhaled or exhaled per breath. This is your depth of breathing.
Resting tidal volume is around 500ml
What is frequency (f)?
The number of breaths taken per minute. This is your rate of breathing.
Resting frequency is between 12 and 20 breaths.
What is minute ventilation (VE)?
The amount of air inhaled or exhaled per minute
What is vital capacity?
The maximum amount of air exhaled following a maximum inhalation.
What is used to measure these lung values
A spirometer
Lines moving upwards show inhalation
Lines moving down snow exhalation
On a graph, what is tidal volume?
The difference between the most inhaled per breath and most exhaled per breath
On a graph, what is frequency?
The gap between the peak of 2 inhalations
What happens to the respiratory system during exercise?
Tidal volume increases to bring more air into the lungs per breath
Frequency of breathing increases as air is inhaled and exhaled more frequently
