1.18 How The Cardiovascular And Respiratory Systems Work Together Flashcards

1
Q

Why do the CVS and RS work together?

A

To supply muscles with a continuous supply of oxygen. And to remove carbon dioxide.

They have to work harder during physical exercise

Q

Do the CVS and RS have to work harder during exercise?

A

Yes, they have to work harder during physical exercise because the demand for oxygen increases and there is more carbon dioxide to remove

Q

What is the path of air through the body? (CVS + RS)

A

.Inhalation
.Journey through respiratory system to alveoli
.Gaseous exchange
.Oxygenated blood taken to heart via pulmonary veins
.Oxygenated blood enters left atrium, moved through bicuspid valve, into left ventricle before being pumped to the rest of the body via aorta
.Aorta carried oxygenated blood to other arteries
.Arteries carry oxygenated blood to muscles and organs
.Oxygenated blood moves through capillaries, where gaseous exchange takes place. Oxygen diffuses into muscles and CO2 into the blood. The blood is now deoxygenated.
.Vein carries the deoxygenated blood to the heart
.Deoxygenated blood enters right atrium through superior/inferior vena cava. Moves through tricuspid valve into right ventricle, before being pumped to lungs via pulmonary artery
.Pulmonary artery carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs
.Gaseous exchange takes place at alveoli. CO2 diffuses into ar
.Air travels back through respiratory system and is exhaled
