Q

How does the skeletal system protect vital organs?

A

Bones act as a rigid shells.
Protect vitals organs and central nervous system which are soft and easily damaged.
Protection crucial for performance and long term health.
Reduces chances of injury meaning players can continue to train and play.
E.g. cranium protecting brain

Q

How does the skeletal system use muscle attachment in physical activity?

A

Bones provide surfaces for muscles to attach to via tendons.
When muscle contracts, movement is achieved.
Ability to move is essential to all physical activities and movements are created by muscles.
E.g. bicep attached to radius and ulna in forearm and when it contracts your elbow flexes

Q

How does the skeletal system use joints for movement?

A

A Joint is place where 2 or more bones meet and allow movement to take place.
Joints are crucial in performance of physical activities.
All sporting actions requires muscles to manipulate bones at joints.
Without joints you wouldn’t be able to move.

Q

How does the skeletal system allow blood cell production?

A

Red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are produced in bone marrow contained within certain bones.
Red blood cells important for aerobic activities.

Q

How does the skeletal system store minerals?

A

Calcium and phosphorus + other minerals, are stored in bones.
Minerals are necessary for strong teeth and bones, while calcium is involved in muscle contractions.
Their role in physical activity is therefore linked to general health of an athlete which affects sports performance.
