108. MRI: PREGNANCY AND PAEDIATRIC PATIENTS Flashcards
- Where are Pregnant Staff and Physicians permitted to work?
- they can work in and around the MR environment
- they cannot remain in the Magnetic Scanning Room
- Can pregnant patients undergo an MRI scan?
- yes they can
- as long as the benefit-risk ratio is at a normal value
- What poses an issue when it comes to MRI scans and pregnant patients?
- the Administration of Contrast Agents
- these should not be routinely provided
- they can pass through the placenta barrier
- they can affect the foetus
- When should we use Contrast Agents?
- when it is dire and justified to do so
- What are the largest problems that are faced when Paediatric patients undergo MRIs?
- the sedation of the patient
- monitoring of the patient
- What needs to be controlled in the MRI setting to ensure that there are no fatal accidents?
- access to the MRI system
- the MRI magnetic field
- How many defined Zones are there regarding the MRI environment?
- 4 zones
- What is Zone 1?
- this is where all the Personnel are allows
- What is Zone 2?
- this is the interface between Zone 1 and Zone 3
- it is where the MRI screening and preparation takes
place - all personnel are allowed in Zone 2
THERE MUST BE A LOCK OR A WARNING:
- between Zone 1 and Zone 2
THERE MUST BE A TRAINED INDIVIDUAL:
- to keep the patients and the non-MRI personnel from
accidentally entering Zone 3 and Zone 4
- What is Zone 3?
- this Zone is strictly restricted
- the magnetic fields are strong enough to present a
threat
IF UNSCREENED PERSONNEL ENTER THIS FREELY:
- they may have ferromagnetic materials on them
- this could cause death or serious injury
THIS AREA MUST BE STRICTLY MONITORED:
- only MR-trained personnel and screened patients can
enter this area
- What is Zone 4?
ONLY:
- screened patients can enter this zone
- they are under direct and constant supervision from
MR-trained Personnel
THIS ZONE:
- has the highest magnetic field
- those in it are at the largest risk
- death and serious injury can occur
- What can the patient that is being screened in Zone 4 experience?
- Heating
- Missile Effects
- Radio Frequency Antenna effects
- Lack of Oxygen
- Define: the Projectile Effect.
- this is when a metal object is exposed to the magnetic
field - it can compromise the safety of anyone that is
between the object and the magnet system
- What is the most dangerous room and imaging facility in the hospital?
- the MR Scan Room
- this is because it is possible to seriously injure
someone - or even to kill them in a second
- What can be said about the speed at which a small metal paperclip or hairpin travel when they are pulled by a 1.5 Tesla magnet?
- they have a terminal velocity of 40 mph
- this poses a serious risk to anyone in the room
LARGER METAL OBJECTS:
- travel at much higher velocities
- they can be fatal to any person in their path
