You Can Capture the Sun’s Energy Using Solar Cells Flashcards
What do solar cells use?
Energy from the sun to directly generate electricity
What do solar cells generate?
D.c - same as a battery
What does the sun provide?
A renewable energy source - won’t run out
Do they produce any pollution?
No
Are they expensive?
Expensive to set up, but after that the energy is free and running cost is almost nil
On how big of a scale do they usually generate electricity?
Relatively small scale e.g individual homes
How is expensive is it to connect them to the national grid?
Too expensive and not practical - connecting them to national grid expense can be enormous compare to value of electricity generated
When can solar cells only generate enough electricity to be useful?
When they have enough sunlight - which can be a problem at might
How can you create a system that can store energy during the day for use at night?
The cells can be linked to rechargeable batteries
What are solar cells often the best way to power?
Power calculators or watches that don’t use much energy
Where are they also used?
In remote places where there’s not much choice and in satellites
