Hydroelectricity - Catching Rainwater Flashcards
What does hydroelectric power often require?
The flooding got a valley by building A big Dam
What is done to the rainwater?
It is caught and allowed out through turbines
Where does it transfer energy from and to and why?
From gpe store of the water to kinetic energy stores as it falls, used to generate electricity
What kind of energy resource is it?
Renewable
What is good about it?
No pollution
What are the main problems with it?
- Big impact on the environment due to flooding The Valley
- possible loss of habitat for some species
- reservoirs can look very unsightly when dried up
What can avoid some of these problems?
Location in remote valleys
What is a big advantage?
Immediate response to increased demand
What happens if more energy is needed than the national grid can supply?
More waters released
Problems with reliability?
No problem except in times of drought
How expensive are they?
Initial costs are high, but there’s no fuel and low running costs
