Draw A Ray Diagram for a Refracted Wave Flashcards
What does a ray diagram show?
The path that a wave travels
What do you do first?
By drawing the boundary between your two materials and the normal (a line 90° to the boundary)
What do you do second?
Draw an incident ray that meets the normal at the boundary
What is the angle between the ray and the normal?
The angle of incidence
What do you do third?
Draw the refracted ray on the other side of the boundary
What happens if the second material is denser than the first?
The refracted ray bends towards the normal
What is the size of the angle between the refracted ray and the normal?
It is smaller than the angle of incidence
What happens if the second material is less dense?
The angle of refraction is larger than the angle of incidence
