Wave Power - Lots of Little Wave Converters Flashcards
What is one way of harvesting wave power?
With lots of small wave converter located around the coast
What happens as waves come in to the shore?
They provide an up and down motion which can be used to drive a generator
What is the energy transferred to and from and why?
Transferred from the kinetic energy store of the waves to the kinetic energy store of the turbine, used to generate electricity
What is good about it for the environment?
There’s no pollution and its reliable
What are the main problems?
Ruining the view and being a hazard to boats
Fairly unreliable - waves die out when wind drops
How expensive are they?
Initial costs are height but there are no fuel costs and minimal running costs
On what scale does it provide energy?
Unlikely to provide energy on a large scale but can be very useful on small islands
