X-Rays are directed through the object/body onto a detector plate

To help doctors diagnose broken bones
Why do radiographers in hospitals take X-ray photos?
Because X-Rays pass easily through flesh but not through denser material like bones/metal
What can exposure to X-rays cause?
Mutations which lead to cancer
How do patients/doctors keep exposure to radiation to a minimum?
By protecting themselves as much as possible, by lead aprons and shields
