Evaporation is a Special Example of Changing States Flashcards
What is evaporation?
When particles escape from a liquid and become gas particles
What can particles evaporate from?
A liquid at temperatures that are much lower than the liquids boiling point
What can particles near the surface of a liquid do?
Escape and become gas particles
What direction are the particles travelling in to escape the liquid?
The right direction
Why do the particles need to travel fast enough?
To overcome the attraction forces of the other particles
What are the fastest particles most likely to do?
Evaporate from the liquid
What happens when they do (fastest particles)?
the average speed and energy in the kinetic energy stores of the remaining particles decreases
What does this decrease in average particle energy mean?
The temperature of the remaining liquid falls - the liquid cools
How can the cooling effect be helpful?
When you sweat, the water from the sweat on your skin evaporates, cooling you down
