Wx Planning Domestic, Flag, Supplemental Flashcards
When is an Alternate airport required for departure
Alt Airport must be _______
Can CAT 2/3 min be used at the Alt
Airport must be within _______
- 121.617
- When the wx at takeoff is below the landing minimums for the aircraft and/or crew
- Alt Airport must be listed on flight release
o OEI CAT 2/3 minimums can be used with the appropriate OpSpec
o 2 engines: within 1 hour at OEI cruise speed in still air
o 3 or more engines: within 2 hour at OEI cruise speed in still air
When is a destination alternate required for DOMESTIC ops
Alt must be __________
- 121.619
- 1 hour before to 1 hour after: Ceiling less than 2,000’ or vis is less than 3sm
- Alt airport must be listed on flight release
When is 2nd Destination alternate required
Alt.s must be ________
- 121.619
o When weather and destination and alternate are marginal for domestic ops
• Marginal is defined by operator
- Rule 3585 for Domestic ops
- CAT 2/3 Wx minimums applied at destination or destination alternate
- if approved
- Alts must be listed on flight release
Explain Rule 3585
- 2 destination alternates are required for domestic ops when:
o Destination - 1 hour before to 1 hour after if wx is below min, not less than ½ of min.s due to a conditional phrase(BCMG, PROB, TEMPO)
o 1st Alt – at ETA wx can be below planning min, not less than ½, due to conditional phrase
• 2nd Alt – not less than Planning min at ETA
When is a destination alternate required for FLAG ops
Alt must be _______
Flights with no Alternates
- 121.621
- Alt airport must be listed on flight release
- Flight is more than 6 hours, requires an alternate
- Flights is less than 6 hours, requires an alternate when:
o 1 hour before to 1 hour after ETA the wx at the destination is:
• less than 1,500’ above lowest circling MDA
• if required and authorized
• less than 1,500’ above lowest DA or 2,000’ AFE(whichever is greater)
• Vis is less than 3sm or 2sm more than the lowest minimums (whichever is greater) - Flights with NO alternate airport
o 121.645(c)
• Fly for 2 hours at normal cruise consumption considering wind and weather conditions
When is a destination alternate required for Supplemental ops
Alt must be __________
Flights with no Alternates
- 121.623
- Alt airport must be listed on flight release
- Destination alternate is required within the 48 contiguous states
- Destination Alternate is required UNLESS:
o The destination is outside of the 48 contiguous states on a route without an available destination alternate
• FAR 121.645
• Standard Fuel for supplemental ops +
• Fuel to fly for 2 hours at normal cruise consumption considering wind and weather conditions
The weather at the Takeoff or destination Alternate must be
Wind Must be ______
GPS approaches are considered _______
An Airport with 2 navaids can be considered as _________
CAT 2/3 Alt Min
- Weather at ETA is at least:
o OpSpec C055
o Wind and gust must be within limitations
• 1 navaid: + 400’ and 1sm, (5000) (1600m)
- CAT 1 or Non P straight in
• 2 navaids: + 200’ and 1/2sm, (2400)(800m) added to the higher of the 2
• Same runway with an approach to each side
o Rwy 09 ILS/27 ILS: 2 operational facilities
o GPS approaches are considered as 1 navaid
• An airport with 2 navaids can be considered as only 1 if derived minimums for 2 navaids is more restrictive
• Cat 2 and at least 2 navaids • 300’ + 3/4sm (1200m), (4000 RVR) • Cat 3 and at least 2 navaids • 200’ + 1/2sm(800m), (2400 RVR) o can be reduced to 700m
ETOPS suitable airport
How to calculate useable times
Wind must be ______
GPS Approaches are considered ______
CAT 2/3 Min.s
WY Min.s
- 121.624
- From the earliest time of arrival to the latest time of arrival a safe landing can be made and the weather is:
o 1 approach/navaid - Cat 1 ILS or straight in Non P
• +400’ + 1sm(5000’) or 1600m
o 2 approaches/navaids to different runways
• +200’ + 1/2sm(2,400’) or 800m added to the higher of the 2
• Same runway with an approach to each side
o Rwy 09 ILS/27 ILS: 2 operational facilities
o Earliest time: From ETP to Alt at normal cruise speed and level
o Latest time: From ETP to Alt at LRC at 10,000’ or MORA
- Planning Wx(Recommended based on FAA AC120-42B)
o C055
o Wind and gust must be within limitations
o GPS approaches are considered as 1 navaid
o Cat 2 and at least 2 navaids • 300’ + 3/4sm (1200m), (4000 RVR) (1200m) o Cat 3 and at least 2 navaids • 200’ + 1/2sm(800m), (2400 RVR) o WY • Precision • 200’ + 800m • Non P • 400’ + 1500m
Airplane landing calculation at destination and alternate airport
How is the runway selected
- (FAR 121.95)Airplane must be able to be brought to a full stop within 60% of the effective length of a dry runway from a point 50’ above the runway. If the runway is wet or slippery the AFM landing distance is increased by 115%
o Dry landing distance x 1.67 < Runway Available
o Wet landing distance x 1.92 < Runway Available
• Most favorable runway and direction
• Most suitable based on the probable wind, landing aids, and terrain
