What is a wood lathe?

A

Material held in a chuck against a rotated blade/chisel. Often hand lathes can be made using own chisels. Key features: chisel rest, head stock, tail stock, enddog (prong drive that holds material). Machine rotates quickly and allows for material to be cut away.

Pros and Cons of a wood lathe?

A

Pro = Waste can be reused.
One off shapes can be made
Cons = Long objects can flex if not supported correctly. difficult to reset to centre once removed. Difficult to make copies by hand. Tools must be sharpened regularly.

What is debarking?

A

Used when a tree is felled to add protection and better aesthetics to the wood. Bark is shaved off using a portable/stationary machine. After it is sent to be cut into stock form.

What is wood planing?

A

Wood cut thinly to fit to size. In manufacturing, large amounts of wood can be planed quicker.

A

Stands for Computer Numerical Control. Used to add intricate designs to doors, banisters and others. Computer aided head cuts and engraves. High quality finish.
