To keep a record of progress throughout your project
What are the benefits of using a model?
- Shows finer details of design
- Point out any designer flaws
What is the difference between prototypes and models?
Models: - Not always functional - Any Scale - Usually more for aesthetic demonstration - Cheap Prototype: - Fully functional - Actual version of intended - Expensive - Often used a demonstrator to possible distributors.
What are the main reasons designers use modelling?
Helps with evaluation of prototypes;
- match design specification
- Properly functional
- Experiment tolerances (best/maximum shape for use)
What are the 4 types of production?
- Mass - large quantity
- Batch - medium quantity
- One Of - only one
- Continuous - always created
What are the two main types of production?
Just In Time (JIT)

What is the JIT process?
- Product manufacturing responds to customers demand
- New Materials are only ordered when required to reduce the need for storage
- Better for the environment, less goes to landfill
- Miss out on bulk offers
- Must be reliable or delays may occur
What is Flexible manufacturing?
- Often used in batch production
- Systems can be easily adapted for newer trends
- Can be expensive due to additional start-up costs
Why is one of production more expensive?
The design is usually tailored to a specific person and therefore made by hand of a skilled craftsperson
Tools for modelling?
Paper cutter used to cut card. Roller cutter and arcs in paper can be cut by hand. Compass cutter can cut in a circle. Paints for adding colour Hot wire stripper for foam.
