Design - Paper Flashcards
What forms can paper be made in?
Rolls - printing industry
Sheets - art supply
Ply - layered and held together by glue
What are the common sizes of paper?
A - Common “regular” size
B - Posters and maps
C - Envelopes
What are the differences between cartridge paper and bleed-proof paper?
Cartridge Paper - Thick, white, rough
Bleed-proof paper - white, smooth, solvent staining/bleeding proof
What is tracing/layout paper?
Both are paper used for copying/tracing images
Both are thin and translucent
What are the types of grid paper?
Paper with squares of different sizes Isometric grid (3D drawings)
Why is paper good for the environment?
It is a renewable source
What are some types of paper?
Cartridge - General use, often used in DT
Tracing - Copy existing drawings and repeat them
Duplex board - Used in containers due to water-proof waxy inside.
Solid White Board - Top quality bleached wood, good for printing
Cardboard - Thicker than paper, made of multiple layers glued together.
Corrugated board - Used for packaging, strong
Foil lined board - Good quality with aluminimu foil lining. used for take away meals.
What is offset lithography?
Transference of an image onto an intermediate surface before printing on a sheet. Uses colours: yellow, cyan, magenta, black.
The picture is often reversed twice and appears the same way round as orignal image.
How does lithography work?
- Printing plate has image printed on its surface
- Printing plate kept dampened. Ink applied to plate but is repelled from dampened surfaces (non-image areas)
- As cylinder rotates , ink is transferred to rubber blanket cylinder.
- Ink is now pressed on to the paper/card as it is pulled through the machine.
