What is a hardwood and some examples of it?
Hardwood comes from deciduous trees that lose their leaves in the winter.
Oak
Ash

What is a softwood and some examples of it?
Softwood comes from coniferous trees (trees that do not lose their leaves or “needles”)
Pine
Cedar
Spruce
What is a manufactured wood and examples of it?
Manufactured wood is made by humans. They are usually made by using other woods and adhesive to make them strong.
Chip Board (chips of timber glued together)
MDF (compressed and heated timber chips)
Plywood (Sheets glued at different angles)
What forms can wood often come in?
Square boards
Plank/board
Dowel
Mould
How is plastic made?
It is made through the extraction, refining and polymerization of oils.
What is the difference between thermosetting and thermoplastic?
Thermosetting cannot be reshaped once set into shape
EG. resin, glues, finite materials
Thermoplastic can be reshaped many times and are therefore recyclable.
EG. acrylic, PVC
What are some often used plastics in designing?
Styrofoam= Used in modelling Nylon= Gears and Bearings Polystyrene= Insulators
How can you aesthetically change the appearance of wood?
Staining
Varnishing
Painting
Waxing
What ways can a wood be cut in?
Quarter Sawn - Cut from quarter
Tangential - Cut in squares from centre
Boxed Heart - Centre cut out and planks cut around it
Through and Through - Cut in lines
What is the need to let timber “season”?
To lower the risk of warping and distorting from moisture.
What is the process of laminating wood?
Thin sheets of flexible wood (or wood that has been soaked/steamed for flexibility) will be glued on all sides that have contact with another piece of wood.
Clamp into the mould and keep there to put a laminated curve into the wood.
How can wood be prepped before being used?
It can be planed or sanded
What does yacht varnish do?
Yacht varnish gives the wood a waterproof outside cover. This is often used for wooden boats.
