Temporary Joints Flashcards
What are the 3 types of temporary joints?
Screws, Nails, Knock-Down Joints.
How to join materials using a screw?
- Mark position of the screw on top of wood.
- Drill hole (Same size as screw).
- If using a countersink screw, create a sunken hole for the screw head.
- Put another piece of wood on top and drill a smaller hole.
- Place screw on the first hole and drill carefully and straight with a screwdriver.
Name a couple examples of screws.
Countersunk (flush with wood), Round Head (decorative) , Chipboard (long thread), Self-Tapping (cut metal holes)
How to join materials with Nails?
- Make an indent into the material to make sure the nail will not move.
- Use a hammer, bash the head into the wood.
What is the “dovetail technique”?
Hammering in the nails at an angle to provide more strength in the joint.
Examples of types of nails?
Round wire (Commonly used, can split wood), Oval Wire (Longer, Cannot split wood, small head), Lost head (can be hidden underneath wood)
How to join materials with a knock-down joint?
- Another piece of wood, metal or plastic is put in between to pieces of wood at a 90 degree angle.
- Using screws or nails, holds together the pieces of wood.
What are two examples of knock down joints?
Rigid joints (more long term fixing), Plastic Fixit Blocks (used for fixing broken joints)
