Design - Motion, components and Forces Flashcards
What is linear motion?
1 way straight motion
eg. sliding door
What is rotary motion?
Movement in a circle
eg. helicopter blade
What is reciprocating?
Movement back and forth
eg. piston
What is oscillating motion?
Swinging in alternate directions
eg. pendulum clock
What is a lever?
Pivot around a point
eg. scissors
What is a linkage?
A connection mechanism that transfers motion
What is a pulley?
A cable, rope and pulley mechanism that lifts heavy objects without it seeming so heavy.
What is a chain + sprocket?
Similar to a pulley, less likely to slip
What is a gear?
Wheels with teeth that can be joined together for motion
What is a cam and crank?
A Cam is a shaped wheel that connects to a follower which executes a reciprocating motion.
A crankshaft connects cams with a rod
What is the difference between pneumatics and hydraulics?
Pneumatics use the controlled release of controlled air for movement.
Hydraulics use a transportation of compressed liquids from large to smaller areas.
What are the 5 forces?
Tension - Opposite direction pull or stretch
Compression - Push towards each other to squash
Bending - Force at an angle
Torsion - Twisting in opposite directions
Shear - Push side to side in opposite directions (eg scissors)
