Design - Quality checks, ergonomics, tolerance and safety Flashcards
What is quality control?
Regular testing throughout the manufacturing period against a specification.
Every 1000 (example) tested for quality
This could alert ways of improving the product in the future.
What is quality assurance?
The procedure for managing quality and maintaining a constantly high standard.
Staff, equipment and materials must be thoroughly checked before use and safety
This is to assure customers that the products are reliable
What is tolerance?
An acceptable difference in measurements for a product (+/- values). This can be in either;
- size
- Weight
- Performance
What is the need for a tolerance?
Ensure quality and consistence throughout the products
What makes tolerances more expensive?
The smaller the tolerance the more expensive it will be as there needs to be more checks for the right size as well as more accurate machinery.
What factors may affect tolerance accuracy?
Cutting equipment (eg. knife/laser is more accurate than scissors) Measuring equipment (metal rule better than cheap plastic ruler)
What are 5 examples of means of safety in a workshop?
Machine Guards
Fume Extractor
PPE
Clutter free walkways (eg. no bags)
What is a risk assesment?
Identifying hazards around the workshop
This is now a legal requirement in all workshops
What is ergonomics?
Creating most comfortability for humans through the study of how humans interact with their environment.
What 3 factors play into ergonomics?
Sociological - personal space + safety
Psychological - senses
Physiological - physical abilities
What is a target market?
The idea range for a market to make sure products have a more inclusive design range.
What are anthropometrics?
The study of peoples size.
Designers often receive data from the 5th to 95th percentile to integrate into their work.
