Design Materials - Metals Flashcards
What is a ferrous metal?
A metal that contains iron.
What are some examples of a ferrous metals?
Stainless Steel
Mild Steel
Cast Iron
What are some uses of mild steel?
-tough, rusts easily, high tensile strength, can be hardened
-Engineering
School Workshops
What are some properties and uses for stainless steel?
-tough, resistant to rust, stains
-Cutlery
Medical Instruments
What are some examples of non-ferrous metals?
Aluminium
Copper
Brass
What are the properties and uses of aluminium?
- Ductile, soft, malleable, light
- Window frames, aircraft
What are the properties and uses of copper?
- Ductile, Conduct electricity and heat,
- Wires, pipes,tubing,
What is malleability?
The ability to bend or shape easily.
eg. Can be hammered in shape.
What is ductility?
The ability to be stretched.
eg. Copper stretched into wires
What is hardness?
The ability to withstand forceful impact without damage.
What is durability?
The ability to withstand wear or damage.
What is toughness?
The ability to absorb shock without breaking
What is elasticity?
The ability for a material to bent without cracking
What is tensile strength?
The ability of a material to withstand a pulling force without stretching.
What is compressive strength?
The ability to withstand a pushing force without being squashed.
