Composite materials Flashcards
What is a composite material?
Are materials made from two or more parts.
They may have differing physical or chemical properties.
What is CFRP?
Carbon Fibre reinforced Polymer
Similar to fibre glass.
It woven into a textile and resin is applied to cure. The resulting material is very strong (has best strength to weight ratio).
More expensive than fibre glass.
Uses of carbon fibre?
Boat building
Car parts
Space supplies (planes)
Bikes and Motorcycles.
Often used to manufacture sports cars to keep the weight to a minimum but is still strong.
What is KEVLAR? + uses
Lightweight but strong
Often used in:
brake pads, clutch plates, tires, hoses.
Modern F1 cars have kevlar infused fuel tanks to reduce the chance of being punctured and exploding. As kevlar is flexible, it can fit into any shape.
