Wilbank, Dew, Read, Sarasvathy (2006) - quite good "deck" Flashcards
What is the name of Wiltbank’s article?
What to do next? The case of non-predictive strategy
What is the purpose of the article?
By doing a literature study the author shows that there are four different fields in the strategy research area.
Describe the differences in “emphasis on prediction?” (planning school)
There are two different school: the oldest one = planning school, is the traditional strategy school, its view on strategy is that a company needs to predict the future in order to find the sweet-spots and position the company accordingly. The planning school look at prediction as something valuable, and companies need to try harder to predicting better and more accurate. The more uncertainties, to harder organisations need to work in order to predict. And even if predictions is inaccurate, they serve as a frame to evaluate and develop emergent strategies.
Describe the differences in “emphasis on prediction?” (Adaption/learning)
The learning school, argue that it is best to minimising the use of strategic tools. They say that it just blinding our view of the world that is present. Having flexibility and an adaptive approach will out-manouver competitors.
Describe the differences in “emphasis on prediction?” (planned emergent)
a combination of the two older schools. in this school they advocate that organisations plan to be able to adapt if emergencies appear. scenarios is made in order to predict the future, and by using different scenarios - the strategies can be made in order to meet to demands from all of them (or find solutions on how to adapt if one or several scenarios would appear).
Explain the differences in “emphasis of control”
There are basically two view of how the future look like: 1. Exogeneity = you can change the future, or at least influence what will happen in the future by the actions you do today. 2. Endogeneity= The surroundings exists to which you have to adapt. you are passive and have to act according to what the future brings. environment is beyond our control.
Explain the model of Wiltbank
What is planning?
This is the traditional view, Porter ex.
try harder to predict more accurately. We are passive to the future and cannot control what will happen.
What is adaptive?
We cannot control the future, it comes as it comes - and frankly we dont care. We adapt, tryng to focus on the present rather than the future. Our mental mind is in the present.
Move faster to adapt to a rapidly changing environment.
What is Visionary?
We have an predictive control of the future. We can predict it and the action we do today might help us create a more profitable future for us. We create visions that guide our actions today.
Persistently build your clear vision of a valuable future.
What is transformative?
We cannot predict the future, but we are aware that our actions today influences the future - but we do not aim into the future (as the visionries does). We create value today, by finding co-creators and partners. We are entrepreneurs.
What is the two main points for not predicting the future, according to Wiltbank?
- it point towards that creativity and entrepreneurship is limited by strategizing.
- it makes strategizing cheaper by eliminting cost trying to predict the future, as well as reducing the cost of failures.
