Normann, 2001 Ch. 6 - Prime Movership as Ecogenesis -quite good "deck" Flashcards
Explain ecogenesis, and why it is important for Prime Movers
left-upper cell = Icarus paradox. Right-upper cell = Wiltbank paper and Prime mover LEft-down cell = passive and operational effectiveness (use Porter arguments from other courses). Right Down cell = Porter’s view of strategy. Use Wiltbanks paper
Ecogenesis: Making the new market dependent from one’s prime moving approach/content
Explain difference between proactive and reactive change:
Proactive = inside out =
CONTINUOS IMPORVMENTS
RETHINKING AND RENEWAL OF BUSINESS MODEL
Reactive = outside in = environment effect us:
Reconfiguration means more than to just adapt passively caused by external factors.
Characteristics of the ecogenetic strategies.
- Ecogenesis comes from ‘hard’ technology and ‘soft’ concepts. It may start from either. ‘Infrastructure’ or ‘networks’. Snowball effect.
- The focal actor - Prime Mover - identify sleeping resources and utilize them.
- Prime mover often needs power to achieve ecogenesis system. But need ‘power with’, or ‘power to’ rather than ‘power over’ to maintain the ecogenesis-system.
- Prime movership and ecogenesis involves the creation of a social reality, ‘bringing forth a world’. Can be done by developing technical relationships (between things), or social relationships (between people).
What is prime movership?
Prime Movership: can metaphorical be described as the process of establishing an infrastructure for a larger system, which then will influence the strategies and actions and interactions of other actor sin that system
What is Physical ecogenesis infrastructures?
Physical ecogenesis infrastructures: Many ecogenenetic strategies are technology based. Even so, it takes great skill to bring a sufficient number of actors into agreement so that they line up with a particular system, perhaps
modifying it in the process (e.g. sony and Philips succeed with this at introduction of Compact Disc)
The power of this kind of ecogenesis which builds on creating a new ‘infrastructure’ standard can be interfered from the stability that often results after the standard or system has become established, even if better alternatives might exist or appear
What is Concept- and symbol- based ecogenesis?
- Ecogenetic strategies do not have to be technology based
- Sometimes they start out more or less as concept based though the concept will usually have to be backed up with technology
- Concept based: the momentum of the process comes from the vision of the concept (e.g. Tetra Pack; Xerox) -> Visions of a more effective larger system are established, spanning resources and processes much broader than own realm of activities; based on such an analysis then visionary concepts evolved + supporting hard technology and services embody these concepts
- Symbol-based: mental concept which stimulates interaction and imagination; the resulting structural patterns and interactions lead to concret initiatives an physical changes, and the process may now have the dynamic momentum that is necessary so that the concept becomes self-realizing (e.g. bridge across the strait of Öresund)
Whatr is the successful characteristics of econenetic strategies?
- interaction between hard technology/infrastructure and soft concepts
- linked to ‘increasing returns’ economy; infrastructure and network concepts; first stage in which the seeds are sown and planted, and a second stage when they are linked to each other so that a movement and a snowball effect can be expected
- Prime Mover tends to be successful if it can identify and mobilize sleeping resources that can take on more value based on a concept and systematic view
- Prime Mover design plus-sum game and make sure that everyone or enough players win; create a social reality (technological relationship: between things), social relationship (between people)
