Jarzabkowski and Spee (2009) - OKish "deck" Flashcards
What is the name of Jarzabkowski and Spee’s article?
Strategy-as-practice: A review and future directions for the field
Name the three different level’s that strategy can take place at?
Micro, Meso and MAcro
What is Micro?
refers to those studies that explore and attempt to explain strategy praxis at levels of the individual or group’s experience of a specific episode, such as a decision, meeting or work- shop. That is, studies which seek to explain some specific phenomena which are relatively proximal to the actors constructing it and hence might be considered part of their micro interactions
What is Meso?
refers to studies that explore and attempt to explain strategy praxis at the organizational or sub-organizational level, such as a change programme, or a strategy process, or a pattern of strategic actions.
What is Macro?
refers to studies that explore and attempt to explain strategy praxis at the institutional level, which is most typically associated with explaining patterns of action within a specific industry. Each of these domains represents a possible area of s-as-p research, some of which have been more heavily populated with empirical research, while others have primarily been framed theoretically but have not, as yet, been the subject of empirical research.
Whats is Strategy-as-practice? (s-as-p)
as a research topic is concerned with the doing of strategy; who does it, what they do, how they do it, what they use, and what implications this has for shaping strategy. Also, it can be defined in this way: as a situated, socially accomplished activity, while strategizing comprises those actions, interactions and negotiations of multiple actors and the situated practices that they draw upon in accomplishing that activity.
What outcomes do Jarzabkowski and Spee talk about?
- personal/individual outcome (a strategy could change an individual’s ability to influence, this could motivate an individual and explain his or her experience)
- group outcomes (group receives a smaller responsibility)
- strategizing process outcomes (a strategy could change how strategy process is being performed)
- organizational outcomes (a strategy could change how an organization interact between the sections, the outcome of this could be that the management receives new ideas acquired from lower levels of the organization)
- institutional outcomes (a change could be that different organizations develops alliances and similar interorganizational co-operations)
