Mintzberg (1985) - quite good "deck" Flashcards
What is the titel of Mintzberg’s paper?
Of Strategies, Deliberate and Emergent
What is the main idea of the paper?
To explain the differences between intendent and emergent strategies, and how which strategies that becomes realised.
How many strategy types are there?
8 + 1. Planned, Entrepreneurial, Ideological, Umbrella, Process, Unconnected, Consensus, Imposed and Emergent.
Explain planned strategy.
Strategy originate from formal plans. Precise intentions exists, they are formulated and articulated by central leadership Strategies most deliberate.
Explain Entrepreneurial strategy.
Strategies originate in central visions, intentions exists as personal, unarticulated visions of single leader, and so adaptable to new opportunities, strategies relatively deliberate Strategy looks like a vision where arrows follows to reach that vision.
Explain Ideological strategy.
Strategies originate from shared beliefs. intention exists as collective vision of all actors in inspirational form and relatively immutable. controlled normatively thought indoctrination and or socialisation. strategies rather deliberate. looks like a vision where arrows flies from.
Explain Umbrella organisation.
Strategies originate in constrains: leadership controls organisations actions, defines strategies boundaries on target within which other actors respond to. Strategies partly deliberate, partly emergent and deliberate emergent.
Explain the process strategy
Strategies originate in process: leadership controls process aspects of strategy (hiring, strutuce, etc) leaving content aspect to other actors. Strategies partly deliberate and partly emergent.
Explain unconnected strategy.
Strategies originate in enclaves: actors loosely coupled to rest of organisation’s produce’s patterns, in own action in absence of, or in direct contradiction to, central or common intentions.
strategies orginially emergent wheter or not deliberate from actors.
Explain consensus strategy
Strategies originate from consensus: through mutual adjustments, actors converge on patterns that become pervasive in absence of central or common intentions, strategies rather emergent.
Explain imposed strategy
strategies originate in environment: environment dictates patterns in action either throught direct impositions or throught implicity pre-empting or bounding organisational choice: Strategies most emergent, although may be internalized by organisations and made deliberate.
