Week1- Fitness testing and VO2max Flashcards
What impacts an individuals ability to train and respond to training?
-Genetics
-Training history
-Motivation
-Lifestyle
What are the 3 categories to consider when defining physical fitness?
-Cardiorespiratory capacity (power)
-Body composition
-musculoskeletal fitness
What are skill-related fitness?
-Agility
-Balance
-Co-ordination
-Speed
-Power
-Reaction Time
What does athlete testing allow for?
analysis, producing objective, quantitative measures and extract information on the effectiveness of programming, recovery modalities and readiness to return following injury
When is aerobic capacity (VO2max) vital?
in events longer than ~3mins
What is involved in the testing loop?
-Testing
-Analysis
-Feedback
-Inform
What is cardiorespiratory fitness?
the interaction between the heart (cardiac) and lungs (respiratory) that maximises performance and recovery
What defines an individuals cardiorespiratory fitness?
ability to preform strenuous task for a prolonged period
What defines VO2max?
-The maximal rate oxygen is consumed
-physiological ceiling for delivery of oxygen to the muscles
What does a high VO2max mean?
greater ability to sustain aerobic work at higher intensities for a longer time
What is VO2max affected by?
Genetics
What is VO2max modified by?
training
How does oxygen uptake increase?
linearly until maximum oxygen uptake is reached
How do you verify that VO2max has been reached?
a plateau in oxygen consumption despite an increase in work rate
What is the secondary criteria is a plateau is not reached?
-Reaching age-predicted HRmax
-Achieving blood lactate concentration of 8mmol/L or higher
-Attaining a respiratory exchange ratio (RER=VCO2/VO2)of 1.15 or higher
-verification test
