Week 4 - Pectoral Girdle Flashcards
Does the pectoral girdle articulate w. the vertebral column?
No, instead is held in position + stabilised by a group of large muscles extending from the vertebral column + ribs to the scapula.
What does each pectoral girdle consist of?
Clavicle + scapula
Which is the anterior bone? - Clavicle or scapula?
Clavicle
What shape is the clavicle + why?
Slender S-shaped
Due to medial half being convex anteriorly + lateral half being concave anteriorly.
Define convex anteriorly
Curves toward you when viewed in the anatomical position
Define concave anteriorly
Curves away from you when viewed in the anatomical position
Where is the clavicle situated?
Horizontally across anterior part of thorax superior to 1st rib.
What does the clavicle articulate with?
Manubrium of sternum at the STERNOCLAVICULAR JOINT.
Acromion of the scapula = ACROMIOCLAVICULAR JOINT.
Is the clavicle subcutaneous?
Yes
Define subcutaneous
Under the skin.
What are the ends of the clavicle called
Rounded sternal end (medial end).
Broad, flat acromial end (lateral end).
Conoid tubercle
What is it?
Where can it be found?
Attachment point for the conoid ligament, attaching the clavicle + scapula.
On the inferior surface of the lateral end of the clavicle.
Where is the impression for the costoclavicular ligament
And what does it allow
Inferior surface of clavicle’s sternal end
Allows attachment of clavicle to 1st rib.
Describe the scapula
Large, triangular flat bone
Describe the spine of the scapula
Prominent ridge running diagonally across its posterior surface.
It’s lateral end of the spine projects as a flattened expanded process called the ACROMION.
