Kinanthropometry - Bone Breadths Flashcards
What should happen to landmarks for bone breadth measurements?
Should be palpated w/ the fingers.
What happens after the bone landmark has been palpated w/ the fingers?
Apply anthropometer (bone calliper) firmly to bone, compressing soft tissue when necessary.
How should the calliper be held?
Hand + thumb related
Calliper body on dorsal surface (back) of the hands w/ thumbs rested against the inside edge of callipers branches.
How should the calliper be held?
Extended index fingers
Extended index fingers lie along outside edges of the branches.
How should the calliper be held?
Middle fingers
Free to palpate bony landmarks on which the calliper faces.
Index fingers then free to exert pressure on lateral side of blades to ⬇️ thickness of superficial soft tissue.
When are the measurements made?
When callipers in place w/ firm pressure maintained along index fingers.
List the bone breadths
Biepicondylar humerus
Bimalleolar breadth
Biepicondylar femur breadth
Bistyloideus breadth
Location for the biepicondylar humerus
Between medial + lateral epicondyles of humerus.
In what position is the arm for biepicondylar humerus
Flexion of shoulder + elbow
What does the measurer do for the biepicondylar humerus
Palpates epicondyles
Applies blades of anthropometer at a slight upward angle while firmly pressing blades to bone.
Location for the bimalleolar breadth
Max distance between most medial + lateral extensions of malleoli.
Position of subject for bimalleolar breadth
Stands erect w/ weight evenly distributed over both feet.
What does the measurer do for the bimalloelar breadth
Palpates malleoli
Applies anthropometric firmly to bone.
Horizontal distance measured but plane between malleoli is oblique.
Location for the biepicondylar femur breadth
Between most medial + lateral aspects of femoral condyles (epicondyles)
Position of subject for biepicondylar femur breadth
Sit with leg hanging.
