WEEK 4/1 > UPPER LIMB VESSELS Flashcards
LYMPHATIC VESSELS OF THE UPPER LIMB
- 2 parts
- the vessels themselves
- group lymph nodes
VESSELS
WHERE ARE VESSELS LOCATED
- interstitial space of capillary beds
- endothelial lining containing smooth muscle
WHAT DO VESSELS TRANSPORT
- excess fluids, ions, and proteins which return to the venous system > SVC
LYMPH NODES
WHERE ARE LYMPH NODES LOCATED
- in groups along the vessels
WHAT DO LYMPH NODES CONTAIN
- lymphocytes which are part of the immune system
WHAT DO LYMPHOCYTES DO
- survey the lymph fluid for the presence of foreign molecules
WHERE ARE THEY MOST LOCATED IN UPPER LIMB
- within the axilla, sometimes small numbers are at the elbow
the axillary group of the lymph groups
- axillary group is 5 groups anterior and posterior chest walls drains to the anterior and posterior groups
what does the apical group give rise to
subclavian trunk
VEINS OF THE UPPER LIMB
dorsal venous arch
basilic vein
cephalic vein
medial cubital vein
axillary vein
dorsal venous arch
- superficial system of veins is formed from the dorsal venous arch on the dorsum of the hand
what does the DVA give rise to
- medially > basilic vein
- laterally > cephalic vein
basilic vein
- superficial vein
where does it travel from and to - basilic vein
- from lateral side of the DVA, travels in medial forearm gradually becoming more anterior
location of basilic vein
- lies in the medial roof of the cubital fossa
where does the basilic vein pierce into
- About halfway up the arm, pierces the deep fascia to enter the anterior compartment of the arm
where does the basilic vein go in the axilla
continues as the axillary vein
in the cubital fossa> basilic vein
- linked to cephalic vein by the medial cubital vein
where does the basilic vein drain
- deep brachial veins
CEPHALLIC VEIN
superficial vein
where does the cephalic vein run
- from the lateral side of the dorsal venous arch it initially runs in the roof of the lateral hand region parallel with and between the tendons of EPL AND EPB
where does it ascend - cephallic vein
- on the lateral side of the limb, becoming more anterior in the forearm
where does it lie - cephallic vein
lateral roof the cubital fossa
where does it continue to - cephallic vein
lateral side of the arm, runs in the groove between deltoid and pectoralis major and joins axillary vein in the proximal axilla
MEDIAL CUBITAL VEIN
superficial vein
where does it lie - medial cubital vein
in the roof of the cubital fossa
WHAT IS AXILLARY RENAMED CONTINUATION OF
Basilic vein
where does it commence - axillary vein
at the lower border of the tendon of latissimus dorsi, then renamed the subclavian vein when it crosses the first scalenus anterior
where does it lie - axillary vein
lies on the medial side of the axillary artery
what does it receive - axillary vein
brachial vein in the distal axilla and the cephallic vein in the proximalaqxilla
