WEEK 3 FOREARM Flashcards
What is the bump you feel that makes your elbow?
Olecranon process on ulna
What is the membrane that spands between radius and ulna?
Interosseous membrane
The more proximal the muscle’s origin, the more proximal the?
Insertion
The more distal a muscle’s origin, the more ____ the insertion?
Distal
Extrinsic versus intrinsic hand muscles
Extrinsic= located distal to the place that it is acting, intrinsic= located IN the hand
What are the two compartments of the forearm?
1) anterior flexor compartment
2) posterior extensor compartment
The anterior compartment is the what bundle of muscles?
Flexor-pronator bundle of muscles
The anterior compartment is organized into 3 layers
1) superficial layer
2) intermediate layer
3) deep layer
Muscles in the forearm cause action in?
Wrist
Muscles in the arm cause action in the?
forearm
What is the odd ball in the posterior compartment?
Brachioradialis
Why is the brachioradialis odd?
It is located in the posterior flexor compartment but is innervated by the radial nerve and flexes forearm (not wrist)
What are the anterior superficial forearm muscles
Pronator teres, palmaris longus, flexor carpi ulnaris, flexor carpi radialis
All anterior superficial forearm muscles originate from?
Common flexor tendon
What are the anterior intermediate muscles of forearm?
Flexor digitorum superficialis
What is the only anterior intermediate muscles of the forearm innervated by median nerve?
Flexor carpi ulnaris
The anterior intermediate forearm muscle originates from? Innervation?
Common flexor tendon and median nerve
What are the anterior deep muscles of the forearm?
Flexor digitorum profundus, flexor pollicis longus, pronator quandratus
What are the anterior deep muscles of the forearm originates from?
Shafts of ulna and radius
What are the layers of posterior compartment of forearm?
1) superficial layer
2) deep layer
What is the odd ball in the posterior extensor-supinator compartment of forearm?
Brachioradialis
Why is the brachioradialis an odd ball in the posterior compartment of forearm?
It is NOT an extensor
What is the tendon that is missing if you a part of the 14% evolutionary advanced people?
Pulmaris longus (it helps with grip)
All of the posterior extensor compartment of the forearm is innervated by?
Radial nerve
What is elbow tendinitis (tennis elbow)?
Repetitive use of superficial extensor muscles that cause radiating pain over the lateral epicondyle and down posterior forearm
Elbow tendinitis is different from golfing elbow how?
Golfing is on medial epicondyle
How is elbow tendinitis fixed?
Worst case scenario is surgery, but steroid injections are the “go-to”
Where is a good place to take a pulse?
Radial artery, it is covered only by skin and fascia at the distal radius (lateral FCR)
