WEEK 2 NEURO BRACHIAL PLEXUS Flashcards
Functional unit of nervous system?
Neuron (cell type)
Dendrites
Input info
Axon
Output info
Motor neurons typically?
Multipolar
Sensory neurons typically?
Pseudounipolar
Nervous system divided into two groups?
By structure. 1) central nervous system 2) peripheral nervous system
CNS
Brain and spinal chord
PNS
Nervous tissue outside of brain and spinal chord
Are the two nervous systems integrated?
YES. Work together.
Afferent fibers
Impulses to the CNS from sensory receptors
Efferent fibers
Impulses away from the CNS to effector organs
What nervous system is the cranial nerve a part of?
PNS
How many cervical nerves are there? Why is this special?
8, because there are only 7 cervical vertebrae
Cervical vertebrae have nerves emerging?
SUPERIOR to their corresponding vertebrae
Spinal nerves T1-Co1 emerge?
Inferior to their corresponding vertebrae
What is special about C8 nerve?
It does not have a corresponding vertebrae, emerges below C7, is a transitional nerve
Gray matter
Cells bodies of nerves (make an H shape)
White matter
Axons of nerves (surround H shape)
Dorsal horns for what info?
Sensory
Ventral horns for what info?
Motor
General flow of impulses?
1) sensory info= in from periphery, into posterior /dorsal horn, sent to brain
2) motor= from brain, synapse on neurons from VENTRAL horn, info leaves
Another term for anterior?
Ventral
Another term for posterior?
Dorsal
Mixed spinal nerves are composed of both?
Afferent and efferent nerve fibers
Dorsal rami?
Only supplies deep back and skin, small
Ventral rami
Supplies everything except deep back, LARGE
Dermatome
Patch of skin innervated by a certain segment
Myotome
Muscle innervated by a certain segment
Nerve plexuses are comprised of?
VENTRAL RAMI from several spinal nerves.
Brachial plexus is the ventral rami from?
C5-T1, both afferent and efferent fibers
Each spinal nerve contributes to several?
Peripheral nerves
Motor fibers in a spinal nerve generally supply?
More than 1 muscle
Anatomical Insurance
The idea that muscles receive fibers from more than 1 spinal nerve and each peripheral nerve of a plexus contains fibers from several spinal nerves. IT IS PROTECTION from loss of function
Roots of brachial plexus?
C5-T1
Trunks of brachial plexus?
Superior, middle and inferior
Divisions of brachial plexus?
Anterior and posterior divisions of all three trunks (superior, middle, inferior)
Cords of brachial plexus?
Lateral, medial, posterior
Terminal branches of brachial plexus?
Ulnar, median, radial, axillary, musculocataneous
The brachial plexus is named relative to?
The axillary artery that runs in the middle (aka anterior divisions runs anteriorly to axillary artery)
All plexuses are made of dorsal or ventral rami?
Ventral
What nerves make the M structure?
Musculocutaneous, median, and ulnar nerves
