WEEK 1 PEC REGION, BREAST, AXILLA Flashcards
Why does the variable inferior border of pec region vary?
Bc females have different size breasts, typically around T5 for males (nipple at T4)
What makes up the thoracic cage?
Sternum, jugular notch, vertebrae
Another name for jugular notch?
Suprasternal notch
What makes up the pectoral girdle?
Clavicle and scapula held together by muscles and ligaments
Does the origin or insertion typically move?
Insertion; origin is a fixed location
The lateral pectoral nerves goes through both the pec major and minor?
False. Lateral nerve only goes through Pec Major. Medial Pec nerve goes through BOTH
What makes the base of the axilla?
Fascia and skin
What makes the apex of the axilla?
Clavicle and rib 1
What is the “inlet” of the axilla?
The apex region (clavicle and rib 1)
What makes the anterior wall of the axilla?
Pectoral muscles
What makes the lateral wall of the axilla?
Humerus
What makes the medial wall of the axilla?
Rib cage
What makes the posterior wall of the axilla?
Subscapularis (teres major and latissimus dorsi)
What are the contents of axilliary?
Axillary artery & its branchs, axillary vein, axillary lymph nodes, brachial plexus of nerve (ventral rami of C5-T1) and axillary tail of Spence (of female breast)
Where is the axillary tail of Spence?
Female breast that connects into axillary
What are the vertebrae that start the brachial plexus?
C5-T1
What is found WITHIN the axillary sheath?
Axillary artery, axillary vein, brachial plexus nerves
Artery verses vein
Artery= away from heart, vein= towards heart
The axillary artery is a continuation of what artery?
Subclavian artery
The axillary artery STARTS where?
At the lateral border of the 1st rib
Axillary artery supplies what areas of the body?
Pectoral region, axilla, upper extremity (some back around scapula)
What does axilla mean?
Armpit, or space below shoulder where arm connects
Where does the brachial artery START?
At the LATERAL border of teres major muscle
List in order the subclavian, aorta, brachial, axillary arteries as they leave the heart
Heartaortasubclavianaxillarybrachial
Describe the location of the arteries in the first segment of the axillary artery?
Medial to the pec minor
Describe the location of the arteries in the second segment of the axillary artery?
Deep to the pec minor
Describe the location of the arteries in the third segment of the axillary artery?
Lateral to the pec minor
What is the artery in the first segment of axillary artery branch? What is does?
Superior thoracic artery= supplies first two intercostal spaces
What is the artery in the second segment of axillary artery branch? What is does?
- Thoracoacromial trunk= has clavicular, pectoral, deltoid, and acromial branches
- Lateral thoracic artery= runs with long thoracic nerve and supplies those muscles
What is the artery in the third segment of axillary artery branch? What is does?
- Subscapular artery= divides into thoracodorsal and circumflex scapular branches
- Anterior humeral circumflex artery= passes around surgical neck of humerus
- Posterior humeral circumflex artery= runs with axillary nerve
What artery runs with the long thoracic nerve?
Lateral thoracic artery
What two veins make the axillary vein?
Brachial vein and basilic vein (pinky)
What vein drains into the axillary vein?
Cephalic (thumb)
What arteries/veins supply the breast?
Lateral AND medial mammary branches
Mammary branches come off of what artery/vein?
Lateral thoracic (which comes off of axillary)
What specific lymph nodes drains the breast?
Anterior lymph nodes
What innervates the breast?
Supraclavicular nerves and intercostal nerve endings
What is special about the nerves in the breast?
They are sensory only, can’t actually cause motor movement
Name the 5 clusters of lymph nodes in axillary?
Lateral, posterior, anterior, central, and apical
Lateral node
Receives most of the upper limb drainage
Posterior node
Drains the upper back
Anterior node
Drain the BREAST and anterior trunk
Central node
Receive lymph from several other groupings of lymph nodes
Apical nodes
Connect with supraclavicular nodes
List the order of lymph node drainage?
Axillary nodes (all 5)supraclavicular nodessubclavian lymph nodesright lymphatic duct right brachiocephalic vein (venous return to heart)
Lymphedema occurs because?
Of obstructions in the flow of lymph
Areolar glands
Secret during breat feeding for protection
Suspensory ligaments
Ligaments found in the breast to give structure
Lactiferous duct
Transfer milk from the mammary lobules to the nipple in a breasts
Mammary lobules
Produce milk in breasts
Areola
Entire dark patch of protective skin that surrounds the nipple
Adult woman during lactating? After menopause?
Lactating have LARGE mammary lobules, after menopause little and less suspensory ligaments
Most affected area of breast cancer is in what location?
Superolateral breast, typically something with suspensory ligaments, texture change, spreads through lymph
