What is deviance in groups?
The violation of the norms of the group
What is dissent in groups?
The expression of disagreement with group norms, actions or a group decision
What are group norms
Beliefs about how group members should act within the group
what are positive deviants?
individuals who deviate by contributing more to the group than the average group members
What are negative deviants?
Individuals failing to live up to important group norms or reject these norms
Why are group members seen to conform to the group, what drives this (2)?
- In face of uncertainty, people look to each other as guide
- Desire to fit in, obtain and approval and avoid punishment
What are the 5 motives why people engage in deviance and dissent?
Motive 1: disengagement, disloyalty or disrespect (negative)
Motive 2: loyalty and concern for the group (sort of positive)
Motive 3: moral rebellion
motive 4: desire to express difference, individuality and uniqueness
Motive 5: tangible rewards and instrumental gain
With Motive 2 of reasons for deviance and dissent, what is constructive deviance?
Deviance or dissent motivated by a desire to attempt to change group norms for the better

Individuals who give priority to following personal convictions over group norms when individual and group norms clash
Why do groups reject deviance and dissent (5)?
- Threatened group positivity
- Threatened group cohesion
- Threatened group distinctiveness
- Threatened group locomotion
- Threatened self-image of other group members
What is the black-sheep effect?
(1) Favourable in-group members is rated more positively than an out-group member who engages in similar behavior
(2) A deviant in-group member is rated more harshly than an out-group member who engages int he same behavior
What is group locomotion?
the ability of a group to achieve its goals
What is the value of dissent?
- Improves decision-making
- Enhances creativity and innovation
What is the value of deviance?
- Affirms group values, classifies norms and how the group is different from other groups
- Draws attention to alternative forms of behavior and thereby allows for cultural change
What is the intergroup sensitivity effect?
In-group members criticizing the group are downgraded less strongly than outsiders making the exact same comments
