Sagittal Plane
Vertical plane that divides body or organ into right & left sides
Coronal (Frontal) Plane
Vertical plane that divides the body or organ into anterior (front) & posterior (back) sides
Transverse (Horizontal) Plane
Horizontal Plane that divides the body or organ into supior (upper) & inferior (lower) portions.
Oblique Plane
Diagonal plane that passes through the body or organ at an angle other than a 90 degree angle
Superior
Toward the head (upper/above)
Inferior
Toward the feet (lower/below)
Anterior
Front or in front of
Ventral
Toward the stomach
Posterior
Back or in back of
Dorsal
Toward the back
Medial
Nearer to or toward the midline
Lateral
Father from the mid-line toward the side of the body
Proximal
Nearer to the attachment of a limb to the trunk. Nearer to the origination of a structure
Distal
Farther from the attachment of a limb to the trunk. Farther from the origination of a structure
Superficial
Toward or on the body surface
Deep
Away from the body surface
Ipsilateral
On the same side of the body
Contralateral
On the opposite side of the body
