WBC's Flashcards
What are the types of WBCs?
Granular leucocytes:
Neutrophils, Eosinophils and Basophils.
A-Granular leucocytes:
Lymphocytes and Monocytes.
What is an over production of WBC’s in the blood called?
Leucocytosis.
What is an Underproduction of WBC’s in the blood called?
Leucopenia.
What is an Underproduction of WBC’s in the blood called?
Leucopenia.
What does a High and low count of Neutrophils mean?
High count: Bacterial infection, burns, stress, inflammation.
Low count: Radiation exposure, drug toxicity, Vitamin b12 deficiency, Systemic lupus.
What does a High and low count of Lymphocytes mean?
High count: Viral infections, some leukemias, infectious monocelucleosis.
Low count: Prolonged illness, HIV infection, Immunosuppression, treatment with cortisol.
What does a High and low count of Monocytes mean?
High count: Viral or fungal infection, tuberculosis, other chronic diseases.
Low count: Bone marrow suppressions, treatment with cortisol.
What does a High and low count of Eosinophils mean?
High count: Allergic reactions, parasitic infections, autoimmune diseases.
Low count: Drug toxicity, stress, acute allergic reactions.
What does a High and low count of Basophils mean?
High count: Allergic reactions, cancers, hypothyroidism.
Low count: Pregnancy, ovulation, stress, Hypothyroidism.
What is the function of Neutrophils?
Attacks bacteria with lysosomal defences and strong oxidants.
What is the function of Eosinophils?
Combats the affects of histamine and attacks certain parasitic worms.
What is the function of Basophils?
Reacts in allergic reactions and intensify the overall inflammatory response.
What is the function of Lymphocytes T, B & NK cells?
B cells:
Develop into plasma cells that secret antibodies.
T cells: attack invading viruses, cancer cells and transplanted tissue.
NK cells: attack a wide variety of infections, microbes and certain arising tumor cells.
How do WBC’s Emigrate through the blood stream?
They have the help of Adhesion Molecules.
